There is no theory. You have only to listen. Fantasy is the law.
- Claude Debussy
I am a composer and the director of two New York City groups: The Kitsune Ensemble, which is an improvising chamber group inspired by rare facets of Japanese culture,
and Blackbirds & Bullets, a sextet blending jazz improvisation with musical elements from around the world.
I have two albums on Portugal's Clean Feed Records, The Uncle Wiggly Suite and Dulces, and one on my own Gozen Reiji Records, Kaidan Suite.
I have received awards and commissions from the the Asian Cultural Council, the American Composers Forum, the Japan Foundation, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, the Puffin Foundation, and the MacPhail Center for Music. My music has appeared in the films Paper Man, Backwards, and Rhyme Animal.
In 2011 and 2013, I worked as an educator in Sri Lanka with The Cartwheel Initiative. We are a team of professional artists who envision a world in which art is used to help young people build bridges within their communities and across ethnic and social divisions. I look forward to expanding our mission elsewhere in the world.
As a percussionist, I am primarily interested in Afro-Cuban music, and have studied with Bobby Sanabria, John Amira, and George Delgado.
